Scholarships After O Levels: The Early Bird Roadmap

A funding roadmap for O level students and leavers — which pathway (JC, poly, ITE, IB) unlocks which scholarships, and how to start building a winning profile now.

O levels done — and already thinking about how to fund the long road ahead? Smart move. Students who plan funding early win far more scholarships than those who start at university application time.

Here's the roadmap for O level students and leavers: what's possible now, and what to set up so you're first in line later.

Can O level students get scholarships right now?

At O level stage, big-ticket university scholarships aren't open yet — they need completed post-secondary qualifications. But that doesn't mean there's nothing to do. The O level → JC/Poly/ITE years are exactly when winners build their profiles.

Step 1: Choose your pathway deliberately

Each route changes which scholarships you'll be eligible for later:

  • Junior College (A levels) — the widest range of overseas and local university scholarships later; strongest for UK/US/top-tier awards
  • Polytechnic diploma — excellent for SIT/SUSS awards, industry sponsorships, and applied universities abroad; see our scholarships for polytechnic graduates guide
  • ITE (Nitec/Higher Nitec) — progression route through poly; Japan's MEXT even offers a fully funded specialised training college track that suits technical study — see our ITE scholarships guide
  • IB Diploma — internationally recognised; strong for global awards — see our IB scholarships guide

Step 2: Scholarships and awards open at O level / post-O level

  • Junior college and polytechnic scholarships — merit awards for strong O level results are offered directly by JCs and polys at admission
  • Edusave and MOE awards — recognition and monetary awards based on O level performance
  • Course-specific sponsorships — companies in engineering, healthcare, logistics and aviation sponsor polytechnic students with ties to the industry
  • CCA and talent awards — sports, arts and uniformed-group achievements can fund further study

Step 3: Build the profile scholarship committees will pay for

Winners at A level / diploma stage usually started at O level with:

  • Consistent grades — a strong GPA/level from day one beats a desperate recovery in year 2
  • One deep commitment — one CCA or community project sustained over years, with a role that grew, beats five shallow memberships
  • Evidence of initiative — started something, organised something, taught someone. Document it as you go
  • English (and a third language) — most overseas scholarships involve interviews; language strength compounds quietly over two years

Step 4: Watch the big awards from now

These open at post-secondary completion — know the names so you're ready:

  • MEXT Scholarship (Japan) — tuition, airfare, ~¥117,000 monthly stipend; one application window a year through the Japanese embassy
  • Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) — full tuition, monthly allowance, airfare, language year; embassy and university tracks
  • KAIST Global Presidential Scholarship — full tuition + ~₩1,000,000/month for top STEM applicants
  • APU / Ritsumeikan tuition reductions (Japan) — 30–100% off tuition, awarded to the majority of entering international students
  • NUS / NTU / SMU / SIT / SUSS merit scholarships and bursaries — the local backbone of any funding plan

Step 5: Set up your tracking system

Scholarships are won by deadlines, not just grades:

  1. Create a free ScholarPath account now
  2. Save every scholarship you might target — even the ones two years away
  3. Deadline reminders then alert you before each application window closes, so nothing slips during exam season
  4. When the time comes, take the free assessment to confirm exactly which awards fit your final results

The students who win multiple scholarships almost never have better results than everyone else — they just started two years earlier.
