Scholarships for Filipino Students: Fully Funded Paths Abroad

Scholarships for Filipino students: MEXT Japan, GKS Korea, KAIST, TIPP Thailand, MIS Malaysia and Singapore awards — plus how to apply from the Philippines with the right documents.
Filipino students are among the most eligible in Southeast Asia for fully funded overseas scholarships — strong English proficiency (a major advantage over most competitors), internationally understood transcripts, and eligibility for a long list of government and university awards. Here's what to target, and how to apply from the Philippines.
Your biggest advantage: English
Most fully funded scholarships (MEXT, GKS, KAIST, APU, Singapore awards) involve interviews, essays and English-medium study. Filipino applicants almost never fail the English requirement — that alone puts you ahead of the majority of the applicant pool. Don't leave it implicit: include an IELTS/TOEFL score if you can, and highlight English-medium schooling.
Fully funded scholarships open to Filipinos
- MEXT Scholarship (Japan) — tuition, examination fees, round-trip airfare and a monthly stipend of roughly ¥117,000, plus a one-year Japanese language course. Applied for through the Japanese embassy in Manila — the embassy recommendation track is the standard route for Filipinos.
- Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) — Undergraduate — full tuition, monthly allowance of roughly ₩1,000,000–1,500,000, airfare, Korean language training year, settlement allowance and medical insurance. The Philippines has an embassy-track quota.
- KAIST Global Presidential Scholarship (Korea) — 100% tuition plus ~₩1,000,000/month for four semesters, for top STEM applicants
- Thailand International Postgraduate Programme (TIPP) — Thai government full scholarship (tuition, allowance, accommodation, airfare, insurance) for students from developing Asian countries
- Malaysia International Scholarship (MIS) — fully funded postgraduate study (tuition, monthly allowance, accommodation) at Malaysian public universities
University merit awards
- Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) — tuition reduction of 30–100% based on entry results; roughly 80% of entering international students receive one
- SUSTech Undergraduate Scholarship (China) — a full-ride award for top applicants with very strong maths and science results
- Wenzhou-Kean University International Scholarship — tuition awards at an English-medium, US-style campus
- Ewha Global Partnership Program (EGPP) — a fully funded bachelor's award for women from partner developing countries
Studying in Singapore
Singapore is close, English-medium, and has awards open to international students:
- SUTD Undergraduate Scholarship — tiered awards from 50% to full tuition subsidy, open to local and international applicants
- SMU Lee Kong Chian Scholars' Programme — SMU's flagship full-ride leadership scholarship open to outstanding applicants regardless of nationality
- Curtin Singapore and PSB Academy merit scholarships — affordable private-institution routes
How to apply from the Philippines
- Prepare documents early — PSA birth certificate, passport, Form 137/138 transcripts, certificate of honours; embassy-track scholarships require certified copies
- Get references right — a principal or subject teacher who knows your work beats a generic letter from a famous name
- Show financial need where relevant — some awards prioritise students who could not otherwise afford study; clear documentation strengthens the case
- Track deadlines — embassy windows for MEXT and GKS open once a year; missing one means waiting a full cycle
